Funny Way of Asking What You Want Atkins

My boyfriend and I have decided to do the Atkins diet. We have read up on it, and know what to do, but...
He needs to lose 60 pounds, but I only want to lose 15 - 20. I'm mainly doing it because I can't lose those pounds, and I've tried everything, and because people I have talked to say they feel so much better since they've been on it. I was also hungry a lot.
We are on day 2 of induction, and he has a huge headache that won't go away, and my stomach just feels funny. I didn't think it would be that big of deal because I never ate candy or cakes and things like that anyway. But I did eat chips and fries a lot!
Now I know that my weight will come off slower than his, so I won't get discouraged by that. But, I keep having visions of food go through my head that I can't have anymore!! Like silly things. I love stuffing. Now I only have it maybe once a month, but now it's like I wonder how I'll go without it! The same with grilled cheeses!! Can I never ever have that again, or will I be able to treat myself once in a while?
Also, is sugar-free jello allowed during induction with some kind of whipped cream?
I think I need some encouragement.
thanks,
Andrea

Remember - you are making a committment for only two weeks. That is not an impossibly long time, and at the end of the two weeks you'll know if Atkins is for you! I'm betting it is! I have been on Atkins for six months and have lost 55 pounds so far, and I couldn't be happier with it.
Have you read the book? I find it very motivating, and I have reread it a number of times, especially when I am at a plateau (like now).
Good luck to you - it's hard at first but you are doing something good for yourself and I'll bet you deserve it!!
(Sugar free jello and whipped cream with no sugar is fine during induction.)

Your BF is having carb withdrawal. The headaches will go away in a day or two. I felt yucky for the first few days of Atkins, I think because it is the complete opposite of how I have always eaten. Prior to Atkins I ate little protein and loads of carbs (mostly breads, rice, and pasta). It's reasonable that such a shock to your body will result in a few days of the icks.
I am now entering my 6th week of Atkins, and I can say that I do not have cravings and am not hungry. I'm not losing weight as rapidly as a lot of the people here, but I'm losing between 1-3 pounds per week and so far it has been effortless.
If you allow yourself the occasional cheat day, bear in mind that you'll have to go back on induction for at least a few days to get yourself back into ketosis. I haven't had a cheat day yet, but like you I love stuffing and I'd crawl through a minefield for mashed potatoes. I plan to allow myself moderate cheat days around the holidays but other than that I'm going to try to stick very much to plan. For me, it's hard to get back on track once I've gone off.
When I started Atkins I told myself that I'd give it a month, and if I felt good and saw results I'd stick with it. I feel GREAT and am now in it for the long haul. I have a lot of weight to lose (about 90 more pounds) but for the first time ever I feel like I've found the plan that will work for me long term.
Good luck. Give it at least a few weeks and allow yourself to adjust before making the decision to try something else.

thanks guys.
Now today, I feel bloated, sort of like I have to burp , and I have a funny taste in my mouth. I'm wondering if it's because I'm not used to eating as many veggies as I am now. Basically, before this, I hardly ate any.
And does anyone know where I can find a multi-vitamin without iron? I'm having trouble finding some.
thanks,
Andrea

The funny taste in your mouth is from ketosis! That's a good sign!! It means you're losing weight!

Welcome to WISH!!!. The bloated feeling is normal...I felt that way when I was fasting...I am not sure what it is..but it did go away. The icky taste is GOOD!! It will go away..it means you are burning your OWN fat!!! (I love when I get that taste!!!...lol)
I had to go to a health food store and ask for a vitimin w/o iron...but with other Minerals...(it wasn't easy) but Solar makes one....It is a B vitamin..but it has other stuff in it. Plus...I have to take seperate potassium/magniesem. and calcium pills.
Good Luck...this is the HARDEST part...tell your BF to hang in there take some advil if the headaches are unbearable and drink lots and lots of water!!

Beth- one of the Protein Power books by the Eades has a great explanation of why supplemental iron is not good for you. I don't remember the details, but it is along the lines of iron being an oxidant, and the fact that our bodies are good at hording iron.
Also, you should be eating more red meat on Atkins, so you would get extra iron from there.
I used to take iron because whenever I tried to give blood, they would say I was too low. The vits with iron made me quite sick to my stomach, so I was glad to read that it is not necessary to take them.

Speaking of vitamins, also be careful about the dosage of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) listed on the label. For example, the vitamins I am taking has a dosage of 2 tabs daily. That would give me way over 100% of the fat soluble vitamins that are not excreted and can become toxic. I take just one daily and that gives me appropriate amounts.

I think there are many different reasons that someone may not be able to take a mutli vitamin with Iron. For me personally, I have a disease called thalacemina (i have NO idea how it is spelled..lol). It is quite common in people from Meterrterain/Greek/Italian Backrounds. I was told my my Dr. Not to ever take vitamins with iron...it could be lethal over time... (same goes for my children).

One more thing about iron is if you have too much of it in your diet or in vitamin form you will have trouble pooping (sorry). It's a fact, though. Anyone that has taken Prenat's will back up this story.
